I thought it would be fun to put together a little mix tape (plus thank yous) to round out 2016.
It’s been a pretty remarkable year for MG – new friends made, awesome performances seen, terrific adventures, and a brand new project on the way for 2017. Above all else, it’s certainly been a good year for burlesque/cabaret shows. Considering I feel like I’ve been moving with the hand brake on, we’ve actually managed to do quite a bit more than I thought.
So here’s a little taster of what we’ve seen and experienced in 2016…
Mariposa Bop, The Apothecary: Celebration! (playing a mass game of pass the parcel)
“Dinos not Rhinos!…are a girl’s best friend!”
Lena Mae, Cabaret Roulette: Evolution
“You need this in your life!”
Natalya Umanska (Interview: The World According to Natalya Umanska)
“Is it Gin…or not Gin?”
Mariposa Bop, The Apothecary (every time!)
Rubyyy Jones (any show, any place, any time!)
“Do you know where I got these lips from?…The same guy who does autopsies!…So it’s quite likely that I have a stripper’s ass on my face!”
Abigail Collins, Hundred Watt Club, Winchester
“Burlesque is feminist, but…”
Rubyyy Jones, Save Rubyyy Jones: Showgrrrl
“Go the whole hog!”
Natalya Umanska (Interview: The World According to Natalya Umanska)
“I’m channelling the inside of my handbag!”
Anna Lou Larkin, Cabaret Roulette: Bedlam
“We can’t have a threesome today, but we can have one on Monday!”
Miss Cherry Bomb, London Burlesque Festival
“Lili, who’s your daddy!”
Frank (a helpful man in the crowd at Hundred Watt Club, Brighton) talking to Lili La Scala, Hundred Watt Club, Brighton
“I’M CAUSING BEDLAM WITH MY ASS!”
Lilly Snatchdragon, Cabaret Roulette: Bedlam
Some of the best and badass of 2016
(titles link to the features, so be careful where you put your paws!)
“…Peggy undoes a little wedgie in her panties…
(it’s actually quite cute and endearing…which is good because she’ll be doing it a lot!)
…and continues with her show…
“I have ten ex-husbands! So I have a hoop for every husband!”
Peggy begins to get her hoops ready for the show….
Hula, hula, hula.
And. Here. We. Go…
Good legs, Peggy Sued, good legs…
Good wedgies, too.
“Husband number two had the same taste in shoes as me…”
…“…he was a transvestite!”
“ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM like a lightning bolt of love from the ether appears Rubyyy 3 Ys Jones!
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM like a jet fighter she’s on stage big and bad and adoringly indulging!
And with that Rubyyy’s off…riffing through the chaos and mayhem of her loved up anarcho sex funk.
“YOU’RE SO WELCOME…”
“…DON’T I LOOK GORGEOUS!”
“DON’T I LOOK GORGEOUS…DON’T I LOOK GORGEOUS!!!!”
“CHEER FOR ME!”
“I’M A BIG FAT FABULOUS…QUEER CANADIAN!”
“YOU’RE F****** WELCOME!”
WHOOP!!!! WHOOP!!! WHOOP!!
Rumble, rumble, ROAAAAAAAARRRRR!!!!”
Total crowd enthusiasm and appreciation.
LOVE. LOVE. LOVE.
LOVEGRRRL. SHOWGRRRL. RIOTGRRRL.
“…hurtling we go with the very gorgeous and thunderous Tuesday Laveau…who walks onto the stage with a teddy bear’s head covering her own.
Ich wohne in surrealist strasse.
A beautiful woman in a teddy bear head giving it the slide n grind. A tape X on the left nipple. A tape X on the right nipple. Total B-Movie music to go with the performance.
Uber (not the cab company) fantastic.
Following on from the David Lynch delirium we have…
“Everyone on the left say DIS!”
“Everyone on the right say CHARGE!”
Sia’s Alive spirits out of the speakers before detonating into a full on canter…Dis Chargebegins to twist and turn into a beautiful mad ballet. With the song and dance moves, this performance is one epic little motherf*cker…body pyrotechnics would be a good way to describe it. It’s explosive and quick and filled with electricity.
“I’M ALIVE! I’M ALIVE!”
Dis Charge dances off the stage and into the crowd, half naked, 100% determined, a million percent victorious.”
“…The bar darkens…the music from the movie 2001: a Space Odyssey hums and shifts throughout the building…from within the darkness bounces an ape! The ape dances onto the stage…sniffs around a monolithic hoop bathed in light…and it begins to pick it up and dance and hula hoop to the music. Very slowly the ape begins to strip its self of its head and fur to reveal…a Mariposa Bop!
…Free of her ape skin, Mariposa busted her moves and shook her thing before ending abruptly with a cheeky swish of her ‘Homosapien’ derrière.
Voila! Cabaret Roulette Evolution!…”
(for me Bop’s hula ape performance is just about one the best things ever 😉 )
“…From half naked cockroaches we veered into the Jurassic Park era (no, not a stripping Dickie Attenborough) courtesy of an all-singing, all-dancing, all-burlesquing, atomic bombshell dinosaur played by Lena Mae…
…The last time we caught up with Lena she was wearing a mariachi suit with white sneakers…kind of Johnny Cash meets Run DMC. This time she was dressed as a dinosaur with a silver dino head while singing ‘Dinos are a Girl’s Best Friend’ (to the tune of Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend). Showing goofy cunning, this was a fun and games act featuring Lena’s finest showgirl charms…”
“…Kitty Petite tittered onto the stage with massive fairy tale malevolence – tiny footsteps, sneaky looks, an absolute rascal in hiding within a voluminous, sweeping cape. With her mischievous face, slender body, and all round naughtiness, Kitty was a fun-fun-fun performer to watch. The feisty girl even threw in a cheeky glitter cumshot. Fabulous!…”
“…With the departure of one crashing wave came another rolling in from out of the high seas. In this case, the high seas being the crowd of flailing limbs and waving beer glasses. With the lights rolling over into a spooky green mist, Asimov Atomsmasher slinked mysteriously through the audience and onto the stage. Bejewelled and bedevilled in green, Asmiov’s devious act gave us the feeling of being tied to the mast of a hell bound ghost ship during a voyage into the sea of the damned. Asimov being the eerie apparition that teased and taunted us as we were unable to move. Her whole performance contained so much mystique that it felt like something from a life beyond the afterlife.”
“…With the audience now falling into a psychedelic candy filled stupor it was time to…
KABOOM! Wow. I think anyone who saw Aima Indigo‘s performance can say the same…pure explosive transcendence. Walking onto the stage with her full length tattoos and latex Mexican flag underwear (Libidex?), Aima bulldozered the front row, tank tracked the second, and then crushed everything behind it with her big metal riffs, giant fists full of flame, and a tongue lick loaded with napalm. Those in the crowd who weren’t already dead, managed to stay alive long enough to witness pure burlesque/fire dancing hedonism. All volatile word play aside, Aima’s act was also incredibly rhythmic and stylish, and angular, too. She really has a great knack of swinging and sliding those fire sticks around her hands. And for one small split second she was blasting out pure fire from the back of her mouth…”
“So I think this is the night where I fell in love with Natalya Umanska. I’ve seen and experienced her wicked charms before and she was very good. But at The Neon Moon Club on New Year’s eve…
How much is that girl chocked full of searing vitality? Talk about a hot night in Havana with a Cuban missile.
Cute, cheeky and burning with mischief, Natalya has strong arms, toned legs, and is quite frankly the sexiest swearer I’ve ever heard. So much so that you actually want to be verbally abused by her. Repeatedly. Until you’re nothing but a speck of dust on the floor.”
“…And finally to close out the evening, the magic of Ruby Truelove performing her Electric Rodeo Circus act. I swear Ruby gets more gorgeous every time we see her. And ever more sweet and warming, too. We loved the hallucinogenic qualities of this act; the drifting ethereal shimmer, the glitter, the enchantress in a dream filled with sumptuous innuendos. It’s a charming performance taking in pure nineteen-twenties nostalgia and a weird sort of Disney psychedelia…all capped off with a radiant shower under a perfume bottle of glitter.
What a wonderful way to end a night of decadent and edible performance…”
The cast of Hundred Watt Club, Winchester, enjoying a whole bunch of sweets provided by MG…(picture by Lena Mae, I believe)
